So far, the summer of 2020 has been our busiest yet, with
over fifteen new arrivals in just six weeks.
Why the influx of so many animals
in need? We aren’t sure, but we suspect that the holiday season and the
exceptional dry months have meant people may be unwilling to collect lost or
escaped animals. For some owners, pound fees exceed any apparent ‘worth’ as
‘livestock’, so claiming their lost animals may not be cost effective.
For animal sanctuaries, however, all lives are
priceless. We are fortunate to have a positive relationship with a number
of pounds who contact us to assist unclaimed animals, such as our latest
rescues - a group of five beautiful Suffolk sheep.
The lost family were collected early on a Saturday morning
by one of our amazing volunteers. They packed the float with the woolly
rescues before the heat of the day set in.
Once in the Valley, it was
difficult to move through the float to check the new arrivals, their huge
fleeces filling every gap! Further inspection also revealed that one of
the ewes was actually a ram – and so a watch for lambs began, given the huge
size of the Suffolk ladies. Once vaccinated and health checked, the group
was released into the quarantine paddock with newly arrived Raymond Ram and the
shearer was contacted to book in a time to take care of their massive coats.
In the coming weeks we hope to shear and name each of the
group – so watch this space to learn more of their antics. Mr. Ram will be
castrated once his vaccinations are completed, meaning he can remain with his
woolly girlfriends with no risk of further lambs. The five are already
accustomed to Sanctuary routine and know what the sound of the tractor means –
haytime!
