Louis Piper!

You may remember the arrival of sweet duckling Louis Piper back in October of 2024? Just this week, little LP graduated to the outdoor bird area – just look at him now!

We suspect Louis Piper is a mule duck or mulard – a cross between a Pekin and Muscovy duck, so he is quite a solid fellow with tiny black feathers on his crown. 

 Louis Piper may be an adult now, but he still loves pats and will chat away wagging his tail whenever we stop by – he is an absolute delight!

 

New Arrival - Louis Piper Duckling

In early October we were contacted regarding a duckling handed in to a veterinary clinic south of Perth. A member of the public had found the tiny peeping yellow bundle, and left the baby at the clinic, suspecting he was dropped from the air, possibly by a crow.

Louis Piper was subdued on arrival, but eagerly took crumbles and had a big drink before sleeping soundly on his warm pad for six hours straight. 

The following day, Louis found his voice, and began to follow us through the house! Each day sees Louis growing markedly in size, and although he is not quite two months old, he has adult plumage showing through. 

Louis loves swimming in the bath, snacking on spinach, and is quite a favourite with the volunteer team. He joins the Saturday shift for morning tea. He certainly is an adorable little fellow!

 

Cherry the Muscovy

 

In late January we were contacted regarding a domestic duck who had made herself at home in a backyard in the suburbs.  

 

The residents were happy to accommodate her visits, naming her Cherry and leaving out food and water. 

 

Sadly, however, the family that elderly Cherry had attached herself to were moving interstate and she again needed to find a place to call home. 

 

Cherry’s family contacted the Valley, and arrangements were made for Cherry to join the special needs ducks where she can relax and enjoy keeping cool in her autumn years.

 

 

 

Cherry is a friendly little lady and has already made great friends with Genevieve, another female Muscovy – it’s wonderful to see the pair bobbing about in their clam of water together!

 

 

New Arrivals at PVAS - Puddles & Splash

 

Puddles and Splash arrived at WA Wildlife as tiny ducklings. They had been found in a suburban garage and dropped off at the wildlife centre. Little was known about the bright yellow siblings, but being non-native ducklings they needed a new home. They were soon on their way to the Sanctuary with volunteer Jemma.

Puddles and Splash love running about the kitchen, eating spinach and doing zoomies down the hall. They are growing quickly, and will be taking trips outside when the weather warms up.

New Arrivals at PVAS: Webster the Lucky Duck

Webster is a beautiful little grey duck who was rescued after being badly attacked by peacocks at his previous home.  He was nursed back to health, then surrendered to the Sanctuary to regrow his lost feathers. 

 

 

Webster is now fully feathered and loving the peaceful life with his two new friends, Anna and Rudolph, the Sebastapol Geese.

 

 

Mr. Pickles

Mr Pickles is a Pekin duck, coming to the Valley as a young, fluffy teenager. He was very well loved and cared for, but had outgrown his accommodation in a suburban family home, where he had lived after being rescued from a busy marketplace. 

 

Mr Pickles settled into Sanctuary life quickly, investigating his new lamb friends in the lounge room and the recovering hens resting in the warmth of the hall.  

Mr Pickles loves joining us in the kitchen for a snack of fresh greens or climbing atop the piles of laundry awaiting folding. He is growing quickly and already has his adult feathers coming through. In the coming weeks he will meet our family of three other Pekins, where he can enjoy a pond and new duck company.
