Event: Vegan Artisan Markets in August 2023

Thank you to everyone who pops by to see us at the Vegan Artisan Market each month! 

The next is scheduled for Sunday the 27th of August from 9am to 2pm at Mahogany Creek Hall, and we will have an array of delicious baked goods (including gluten free!), soups, curries, beautiful gifts and merchandise!

Vegan Recipe - Cheese Straws

 

Ingredients:

-150 g grated vegan cheese

-150 g plain flour

-150 g Nuttelex Buttery

-Equivalent of 2 eggs using Orgran Egg Replacer

-Cayenne pepper (to sprinkle)

Method:

-Using your fingertips, rub the Nuttelex Buttery and flour together, before adding in grated cheese and egg replacer. 

-Knead lightly into a ball on a floured board.

-Using a rolling pin, roll the ball out to approximately 1cm thick.  

-Cut the pastry into strips and lay on an oven tray lined with baking paper. 

-Twist the strips to make a coiled pattern before sprinkling with cayenne pepper. 

-Bake at 180 C until the tips begin to turn golden.

 Best served fresh from the oven with your favourite dip!

 

 

New Arrival – Radar the Baby Goat

 

Last week we were contacted regarding a one week old boar goat kid who was booked for euthanasia due to chronic eye infections since birth. We were fortunate his owners agreed to surrender Radar to the Sanctuary, and the tiny bleating bundle was soon on his way for emergency veterinary assistance. 

 

Upon assessment, one of Radar’s eyes had sadly collapsed and required urgent removal. The other was closed shut, but intact, and we decided to treat the eye intensively in the hope Radar may one day regain some sight. 

 

 

Radar required a night in clinic following his eye removal. He was very difficult to feed, having had his mum up until his surgery, and a bottle was not familiar at all. He was loud, he wanted to scratch at his stitches, and he was not impressed with the big plastic collar around his neck to prevent him rubbing his face. It was apparent the little patient needed company at all times to keep him calm and rested, and the voli team were happy to help to comfort the new arrival. 

 

 

 

Once his collar could be removed, Radar was buddied up with some new pals – Snowy and Maple – who he could snuggle and play with. Radar has a long recovery ahead, but we are working hard to restore sight in his one remaining eye. He is gradually learning to suckle and it’s wonderful to see his confidence growing with his new Sanctuary family! 

 

 

 

Morty the Calf

Susie, a friend of the Sanctuary, contacted us last month regarding a little bottle fed calf - Morty!   

Morty was born on an Angus beef farm in the southwest. He was a large baby, weighing in at over 45kg at birth, and as a result, presented with abnormal front knees. 

Fortunately, the farmer organised a vet to treat Morty’s legs, and his knees underwent corrective strapping. 

As Morty required many weeks of hand feeding, he was in need of a new family. 

After hearing his story, Susie soon had the sweet little calf on the road to a new life in the Valley! 

Morty’s legs are recovering well, and he is mastering both running and jumping. 

He loves chin scratches, licking hands and snuggling in his straw each night, and has the gentlest moo we’ve ever heard.   

Thank you Susie for coordinating Morty’s arrival -  he’s a very special grass puppy and wins every heart he meets!
