New Arrivals at PVAS - Puddles & Splash

Puddles and Splash arrived at WA Wildlife as tiny ducklings. They had been found in a suburban garage and dropped off at the wildlife centre. Little was known about the bright yellow siblings, but being non-native ducklings they needed a new home. They were soon on their way to the Sanctuary with volunteer Jemma.

Puddles and Splash love running about the kitchen, eating spinach and doing zoomies down the hall. They are growing quickly, and will be taking trips outside when the weather warms up.

Watch this space to see Puddles and Splash once they grow their adult plumage!

New Arrival at PVAS - Nimbus the Lamb

In late May we were contacted about a tiny lamb with a lame back leg. His name was Nimbus, and he was suffering from progressed joint ill. Nimbus was soon booked into The Animal Hospital, where he was sedated and his leg joint assessed. Sadly, further investigation revealed the infection had reached the bone. Leg amputation was the only option to prevent spread of the infection, so Nimbus was booked for a full leg amputation.

Little Nimby bounced back surprisingly well from his procedure, but two weeks later suffered a stomach upset, which set his recovery back markedly. Despite all he had been through, Nimbus was brave and patient with all of his medications and treatments, and after another two weeks, again started to put on weight and take his bottles with enthusiasm.

Nimbus is now ten weeks old and we hope he continues to grow stronger with his best friend Bunny Lamb!

New Arrival at PVAS - Duffy the Donkey

In late June we welcomed beautiful big Duffy the Donkey! Standing at 12.2 hands, Duffy is a huge wild born donkey from the north west of WA, who found himself rounded up with the cattle he had befriended on a station. He was sadly ear tagged and marked, before being transported with his bovine friends to the sale yards.

Fortunately Duffy was seen at the yards by a kind couple, who took him home and cared for him for over nine years. A change in circumstance led Duffy to another loving home, where he was further trained and given lots of love and attention, before making his way to the Sanctuary to join new donkey friends, Albert, Victoria and Spud.

Duffy may be big, but he is very quiet and gentle, loving nothing more than a back scratch or brush.

Duffy loves company and follows the volunteers as they work!

 Welcome to PVAS Duffy!

Shauna the Sheep

By Chris R.

Last month we received a call for assistance through a volunteer, alerting us to a very overgrown sheep on a horse property north of Perth. Affectionately named ‘Shauna’, this little ewe with no identification had strayed onto the property and taken up residence for a couple of years. She was reluctant to be yarded, despite her huge coat, and many months passed as authorities deemed her capture a difficult job to tackle. With some quick coordination, volunteers Tom, Hayley and Teresa championed a plan and met with Shauna’s caretakers on their property. After much chasing, diving and weaving, Shauna was captured and safely in transit, on her way to a new haircut and a new life at the Sanctuary. Shauna settled in for a time and then shearer Brad did his magic, removing her 17 kilogram fleece to reveal a new ewe!

Given the current cool weather and her being clipped for the first time, Shauna was dressed in a new tailored sheep jacket! We can’t wait for Shauna to meet her new sheep friends!

Vegan and Gluten Free Recipe: Apple and Walnut Slice/Muffins

This is a delicious apple recipe which can be adapted to make a slice or muffins. You can also substitute the walnuts for almonds or white chocolate chips if you prefer.

Ingredients:

- 1/2 cup of butter substitute (we used Nuttelex)

- 1 1/4 cups of white granulated sugar

- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

- 1/2 teaspoon of salt

- The equivalent of 3 eggs made up using vegan egg replacer - we used the Orgran brand

- 3 cups of gluten free self raising flour

- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

- 1/2 to 1 cup of your favourite milk substitute - we used soy milk

- 2 cups of finely diced apples and an extra apple cut into quarters and then thin slices to decorate the top of the slice/muffins if desired

- 1/2 cup of walnuts, almonds or white chocolate chips with some extra to decorate

 Method:

- Cream the butter substitute and the sugar.

- Add the egg replacer, vanilla and salt and mix.

- Sift in the flour and cinnamon and stir a little. Then add the soy milk and combine.

- Stir through the apples and nuts.

-  Pour the batter into a large slice tray - the slice will rise - or muffin pans.

- The top of the batter can be decorated with apple slices and nuts. For a more indulgent touch, sprinkle over more granulated sugar (approximately 1/4 of a cup), shake over extra cinnamon, and break up some small pieces of butter substitute over the slice/muffins.

- The muffins will take around 30 minutes to bake, the slice may take up to 50 minutes, depending on the size of the tray used.
