Miss Grabby Hands

By Chris R.

Just before Christmas, we received a call via the Wildcare Helpline regarding a young possum who had taken a fall from her Mum’s pouch in a hills backyard.  We advised her finders to wait and see if Mum Possum came to claim her tiny bundle, but alas, it was not to be. Two hours later, a small but feisty pouch young was delivered to the Sanctuary. The first thing we saw from the swaddled bundle was a set of huge pink hands, wielding tiny claws, clasping desperately onto the blanket. It was getting late, so the title ‘Miss Grabby Hands’ was given to the hissing arrival. The name stuck as those big hands proceeded to grow even larger.

It had been a crazy hot month, with temperatures over 40C each day, and Miss Grabby Hands was tired and very dehydrated. After settling her in a pouch in the quiet, a small amount of possum formula was offered, which she drank enthusiastically before drifting into a deep sleep. Throughout the night more formula and fluids were offered and Miss Grabby responded well.

The next day we visited good friend and marsupial extraordinaire, Liz, from Chidlow Marsupial Hospital, to give Miss Grabby a check over. She had some minor injuries, probably resulting from the fall. She then had X-rays and a follow up check with one of our favourite wildlife vets, Dr. Tim.

Over several weeks, Miss Grabby Hands' appearance changed from velvet to furry. She also put on 50g in just three weeks. She now is enjoying apple and marri blossoms and explores her carry crate with enthusiasm. Watch this space for more updates on her adventures as she grows and learns more about life in the wild!
